Pottery, which is fired ceramic ware that contains clay, is a popular form of artwork that has been in existence for ages. Even as early as the 15th century BCE in China, glazed stoneware was being created. In order to experience the art of pottery making, however, the appropriate ceramic supplies must be utilized. By gathering the necessary ceramic supplies, you can begin your journey to successful pottery making.

1. Clay. Pottery is usually made using earthenware, stoneware, or porcelain. Since different types of pottery clay can produce different looks, it is important to use one that will best fit your needs. Adding additives to your clay, including sand and grog, can also manipulate the texture and appearance of your piece.

2. Pottery wheel. Pottery wheels are used to quickly form clay pieces into seamless, symmetrical designs. Typically, these are used to shape round ceramic ware. Pottery wheels are not necessary for all designs, though, as hand shaping and pinching can also give your piece a unique look.

3. Pottery kiln. Kilns are the most common way to fire pottery, as they produce intense heat that can quickly solidify the clay. There are many kilns available, and they can be heated either by burning wood, electricity, gas, or coal. When using a wood or coal kiln, however, soot and ash will be produced that can affect the appearance of your piece if it is not protected.

4. Paints and glaze. Glaze can be added to the piece before it is fired, which can protect it from the soot and ash that come from wood and coal kilns. Whether the glaze is applied before or after firing, it can also increase the durability of the clay while simultaneously giving it a glossy look. In order to finish completing your piece, you also have the option of painting it. With different colored clay paints, you can design your piece any way you want to give it a unique look.

Pottery making can be a rewarding experience as either a career or as a hobby. In order to ensure that your piece is created effectively, the appropriate ceramic supplies should be obtained. By doing so, your pottery design possibilities can be endless.
