While most people associate new cars with solid performance and longevity, some older cars are actually quite dependable as well. Take the Volkswagon Beetle for example. First introduced in 1938, there have now been more than 21 million Beetles manufactured in an air cooled, rear engined, rear wheel drive configuration. This makes the Beetle the longest running and most manufactured car of any single design platform ever in the world.
There are many reasons for the Beetle’s popularity. During the 1950’s, it was more comfortable and powerful than most European small cars. This was in part due to its solid construction, having been designed for sustained high speeds on the German Autobahn. Its superior tight construction was evidenced by the fact that the Volkswagon Beetle could float if driven into a body of water. So revolutionary and impressive was its design, that in a 1999 international poll, it was voted that fourth most influential car of the 20th century.
Unfortunately, Volkswagon retired the Beetle in 2003 after 65 years of production. However, in part because its popularity, and in part because of its durability, there are still tons of used Beetles on the roads. If you are interested in acquiring a used Beetle, then checking local used car dealers and classic car dealers is a good way to start. You can also find used car dealers online. If you still cannot find a Beetle, then you might want to look at car dealer auctions. You can attend in person, or even bid online. Good luck getting your hands on this truly wonderful vehicle.
